5 Worst Films of 2025

Overall, I would say that 2025 was a great year for film. Was it the highs of 2019 with an Avengers: Endgame, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, et al.? No, but I am more than happy to say that the vast majority of the films I saw this past year were ones that I enjoyed (2025’s top 10 films has been one of the hardest for me to place). While I thought this past year was a strong one, it wouldn’t be year without some of the worst fare that Hollywood’s ever conceived.

5. You’re Cordially Invited

There was a period of time when every Will Ferrell movie was the comedy movie of the year. We are long past that time. You’re Cordially Invited takes all the lackluster comedy from Ferrell’s last several years and puts it into a direct to streaming bore-fest. While there are some decent bits between Ferrell and Witherspoon’s characters, this film continues two unfortunate truths in today’s movie zeitgeist: (1) Will Ferrell’s comedy style has lost its touch and (2) straight to streaming comedy films are almost always a waste of time.

4. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Video game movies have rightfully developed a reputation of being among the worst adaptations to cross the silver screen. While movies like Detective Pikachu, the Sonic trilogy, and Super Mario have started to turn that around, movies like last year’s Until Dawn and Minecraft always manage to completely ruin any progress made. By the worst offender last year was Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. While the first film was also extremely poor in quality, at least it was courteous enough to come out on streaming so I wouldn’t have to pay for the slop. For a premise about killer animatronics possessed by murdered children, these films continue to play extremely safe and lazy. These “horror” films are just the Teletubbies having a bad day.

The Electric State (2025). Via Netflix

3. The Electric State

The Russo brothers struck gold with Community and their work with Marvel Studios, but it is fair to say that their work, post-Endgame, has been mediocre at best. The Electric State is the culmination of all their failures through the filter of their desperate attempt at returning to what made their Marvel films great. The Electric State falls completely short at everything it attempts to be and leaves you feeling the hollow sense of dread that corporate desperation to spend $300m on “starting new franchises” will be the death of quality, well-conceived filmmaking.

Snow White (2025). Via Disney

2. Snow White

I am one of the few people that actually enjoys Disney’s remakes of their classic movies. Aladdin, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Lion King—none of these remakes meet or exceed the heights of their original, but they all offer incredibly entertaining times at the movies. You would think that the remake to Disney’s original princess would join the ranks of these well received reimaginings, but alas, they somehow managed to give us another Dumbo instead. While Rachel Zegler does her best to make the time worth it, the lifeless and bland attempt at modernity leave the film feeling like a distasteful caricature of a historically significant film.

War of the Worlds (2025). Via Universal Pictures and Amazon

1. War of the Worlds

While the other films on this list are bad, there is a special place in hell for everyone involved in the creation of this assault on the senses. This adaptation(?) of HG Wells sci-fi classic is one of the worst films that I have ever seen. While a film like Searching can pull off the web-cam style of film, War of the Worlds is like watching the world’s worst improv group on a Zoom call. The script feels like it was put together in a day, the acting is as rigid and lackluster as a board, and the modern twist is so ill-conceived and stupid that it physically pains me to relive the memory. The only way I will ever watch this monstrosity again is if I need a reminder that literally anybody could make a movie that would be better than that.

Those are, in my opinion, the five worst films of 2025. Getting the negatives out of the way first, my top ten favorite films of 2025 will be up on the site later this week. Happy movie watching!
